Stephen Brittain
Co-founder and Director, InsurTech Gateway by Hambro Perks

Stephen is an experienced innovation consultant with a deep understanding of start-ups, design and strategic innovation and translating this to investors. Five years ago Stephen crossed the chasm from corporate innovation consultant and joined Hambro Perks investment firm. As their first Creative Director, he supported their growing portfolio (including Sipsmiths, Laundrapp, Takumi, TheDots) through early stage product/service development and testing.

Recently he has lead the creation of a dedicated incubation capability aimed at early stage tech companies challenging the insurance market. The InsurTech Gateway is the world’s first authorised InsurTech incubator and is growing a portfolio of high disruptive models for the insurance sector (incl. Floodflash, ByMiles, InMybag).

Prior to joining Hambro Perks Stephen served as Head of Strategy at Native, a design and innovation consultancy. Here, he guided a product and service team of 80+ to create high value customer experiences, and helped traditional businesses to refocus on growth areas opened up by digital technology.

As Senior Strategist at SeymourPowell Stephen led multiple projects in the Corporate Incubator Programme, coordinating design and sell between boards of businesses and their respective regulators. Clients included: BAT (nicotine futures), BBC Worldwide (post DVD futures) and Nike Foundation/DEFRA (aid co-initiatives).

In addition to work, Stephen is a visiting lecture at Cambridge’s Judge Business School, teaching the Digital Business Module on the MBA programme and is a class member of THNK School of Creative Leadership. He holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and an engineering degree from Imperial College London. As an avid designer himself Stephen has won several awards including Sunday Times Ski Product of the Year, and launched map business MountMaps.




Vincent Branch
Chief Executive, Accelerate, XL Catlin

Vincent joined XL Catlin in November 2016, as Chief Executive of Accelerate.With over 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry, most recently he held the position of Chief Underwriting Officer and Chief Actuary for VitalityHealth (part of the Discovery group).

Prior to this role, Vincent was the Global Chief Underwriting Officer for Personal Lines at Zurich Insurance. In these roles he implemented a wide range of product and pricing innovations. He holds a BSc Honours degree in Mathematics from Loughborough University of Technology, and is a Fellow in the UK Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Chartered Insurance Institute.


Matteo Carbone
Founder and Director, IoT Insurance Observatory

Matteo is Founder and Director of the IoT Insurance Observatory, Global InsurTech Thought Leader and Investor.

He is internationally recognized as an insurance industry strategist with a specialization on innovation. Matteo is author and world-renowned authority on InsurTech, ranked among top international InsurTech Influencers, and he has spoken to audiences in twenty different countries. He published the first book dedicated to insurtech: “All the insurance players will be insurtech”.

Matteo has advised more than 100 different players in ten markets around the world and has wide insurance experience which includes set up of industrial and commercial plans, growth strategy definition and support in the start-up of new initiatives, digital strategy development, insurance products innovation, channel strategy and commercial model definition, startups mentorship and advice M&A deals.

Before creating the IoT Insurance Observatory, he spent eleven years in Bain & Company’s Financial Service practice.       

Matteo received his degree in Business Administration from Bocconi University, Milan.


Sam Evans
Founder & General Partner, Eos Venture Partners

Sam Evans is a General Partner with Eos Venture Partners, a Venture Capital firm focusing exclusively on InsurTech.  At Eos, Sam specialises in early stage and growth stage investments in InsurTech and is an active member of the InsurTech community.

Eos has four cornerstones that underpin its approach:
- Exclusively focused on InsurTech

- Global footprint to identify and source opportunities
- Thesis driven manufactured approach to create unique deal flow
- Alignment with insurers to constructively innovate

Prior to launching Eos, Sam was a partner at KPMG where he led their Global Deal Advisory business for insurance. Sam has worked across the globe, advising on over 150 insurance transactions with a total deal value in excess of $75bn and has lived in Sydney, Hong Kong, Zurich and London.


Parul Kaul-Green
Group Head of Innovation UK and Ireland, AXA

Parul is Group Head of Innovation and M&A at AXA UK & Ireland Group. She is responsible for Inorganic and Innovation strategy across Group’s General Insurance, Health, and Asset Management businesses.

She is member of the AXA UK Seed Fund Investment committee which invests in Fintech, Insurtech and Digital Health start-ups for the AXA Group.

Parul is Financial Services and PE expert with Global experience. She is a mentor at The Duke of York Pitch@Palace and Mayor of London’s International Business Partnering and Business Growth Programme. She is on the judge Panel for FinTech 50 Europe, Disrupt 100 and Insurance Times- Technology Excellence Award.

Parul is member of Women in Investing and Careers Advisory group of CFA Institute.

Economist and Investor by training, she has held senior strategist, M&A and investor roles at AXA, Aviva, Family office VC and Citibank.


Andrew Rear

Chief Executive, Munich Re Digital Partners

Andrew Rear is the Chief Executive of Munich Re Digital Partners. He joined Munich Re in 2010, leading the Asia, Africa and UK life businesses until May 2016 when he took up his current role. Digital Partners is a global business working with and investing in start-ups, digital verticals and the sharing economy, with the ambition of building a more engaged proposition for insurance customers. Prior to joining Munich Re, Andrew was a partner and head of the EMEA insurance practice at Oliver Wyman.


Christopher Sandilands
Partner, Oxbow Partners

Chris Sandilands is a Partner at Oxbow Partners, a boutique management consulting firm serving exclusively the insurance industry.  Oxbow Partners is recognised for its leadership in InsurTech-driven change and innovation in the industry.  The firm publishes the annual "InsurTech Impact 25" – an assessment of 25 emerging technology businesses which the Partners believe will have an impact on insurers and brokers in the year ahead.  Chris started his career as a D&O underwriter at Munich Re.  He then moved to Oliver Wyman’s insurance practice.


Jannat Shah,
Investor, AXA Venture Partners (AVP)

Jannat Shah is an Investor with AXA Venture Partners (AVP) in London, focusing on European later stage (Series A+) venture investments. Jannat has been with AVP since the launch of the London office in June 2016.

AVP is a $275m global multi-stage venture capital firm, financially backed by AXA. AVP cheques range from $300k for seed investments to $20m for later-stage companies. AVP invests in enterprise software, FinTech, consumer technologies and digital health propositions globally out of offices in London, Paris, New York and San Francisco. AVP was formerly known as ASV, or AXA Strategic Ventures.

 
Adrian Thornycroft
Programme Director, London Market Target Operating Model

Adrian joined the London Market Target Operating Model as Programme Director in 2015 and is responsible for the establishment and delivery of  market modernisation across the London Insurance Market. Prior to joining the LM TOM, he was Had of Business Projects and Transformation at Canopius, with previous UK roles at Amlin, Old Mutual and Zurich. Adrian has over twenty years’ experience in delivering change across Europe, USA and Africa.  Prior to entering insurance Adrian was a business and IT consultant with Accenture across Retail, Transport and Telecommunications industries. Adrian’s previous roles in Insurance include Change Director, Programme Director and Non-Executive Director across general insurance, life and pensions and London Market insurance.



Rafal Walkiewicz
CEO, Willis Towers Watson Securities

Rafal is CEO of Willis Towers Watson Securities . He joined Willis Towers Watson in 2014. He brings over twenty years of international experience working with financial institutions and in particular insurance companies. He has a long track record of successful execution of multi-billion and mid-market transactions in developed and emerging markets.

Rafal started his career at BMT Brokers where he managed one of the first Polish independent stockbrokers, asset managers and investment banking boutiques. While at BMT, Rafal executed numerous financing, M&A, private equity and restructuring transactions. He built and led the team that developed the first internet futures trading platform in Poland and designed a new IPO procedure that opened equity market for foreign investments.

Subsequently, Rafal spent ten years at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York where as a member of investment banking financial institutions team he advised over $50bn of M&A, financing, anti-raid advisory as well as third party capital, securitization and closed-block transactions, including industry shaping deals: sale of AIG’s international life insurance business, Alico to MetLife, monetization of equity related securities in MetLife Awarded Structured Equity Issuance of 2011 by International Financing Review, and sale of GE’s global reinsurance business to Swiss Re.

Rafal earned M.Sc and PhD in applied economics from Warsaw School of Economics and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is an accomplished author and researcher of financial institutions business models.
